The Sealskinz sock I got are marketed as bike specific as they feature a hi-viz stripe on the top. In practice the stripe is a too small and a bit pointless. However the main thing is do they keep your feet dry? And I can safely say they do. I find them warmer than Gore-tex socks; being thicker they are better for winter use than Gore-tex. In terms of performance over Gore-tex socks I can't comment as both Gore-tex and Sealskinz have kept my feet dry so in my mind they're both winners.
There is a negative to the Sealskinz and that is they are quite uncomfortable to wear as a stand alone sock. The material is quite stiff and the knit is quite uncomfortable. This is particularly true when your feet are cold and you're using a stiff soled clipless shoe.
Have you used them for any other sports? I was thinking of getting these SealSkinz Socks for trail running as I am sick of getting freezing and wet feet half way through my Sunday 15 miler. thoughts welcome

ReplyDeleteI have used them a few times out walking. They're handy for short walks where you may or may not get caught out in the rain with non-waterproof shoes rather than boots.
Since the socks are quite thick the chances are you can only fit a thin sock on too, for this I'd recommend a thing merino wool sock such as the BaaBaa sock from Endura. Also, when merino wool gets wet it keeps you warmer and for longer than any other material I've used.
